It has been suggested that poetry was used in our long distant past as a creative means of passing along traditions and history simply because the poetic language was easy to memorize and enjoyable to recite. Losing a loved one is always hard, whether you have had to deal with loss before or not, so don't try to be a rock, take the time to grieve.
Some of the poems will make you and others around you cry because you can see them in each word or verse, this is also good as it helps with the grieving and healing process. A lot of people choose to read passages from the Bible rather than a poem because they think that this is more appropriate. An anniversary poem given to a wife is a very nice thing.
You will know it when you find it. Romantic poems, even if they are just four lines, with no rhythm and no rhyme scheme, depict the true feelings of lovers. For a completely different approach, try a humorous poem.
Poems can range in topics and styles. Poetry today does not ruminate nearly as much on friendship as it does on love, and the closeness of any two friends is admittedly not as defined as it once was.
